God forgives somebody” means that He -be He blessed- pardons him and forgives him, and (The Forgiver) is one of God’s names, and He –The Right, to whom belongs might & majesty- has express the attribute of His forgiveness in many derivatives (past, present, adjunct, governed and hyperbole)
in many verses, as He -be He blessed- said: “He prayed: ‘O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul! Do Thou then forgive me! So Allah forgave him” (SOURAT AL QASAS- Verse: 16)
And His saying: “Say: If ye do love Allah, follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins” (SOURAT AALI-IMRAN- Verse: 31)
And His saying: “Again will Allah, after this, turn (in mercy) to whom He will: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most Merciful” (SOURAT AT-TAWBAA- Verse: 27)
And His saying: “The Lord of the sin, accepteth repentance, is severe in punishment, and is all Bountiful, there is no god but He: to Him is the final Goal” (SOURAT GHAAFIR – Verse: 3)
And His saying: “Thou art our protector; so forgive us and give us Thy mercy; for Thou art the Best of those who forgive” (SOURAT AL-AARAAF- Verse: 155)
And His saying: “But verily thy Lord is full of forgiveness for mankind for their wrong doing” (SOURAT AR-RAAD- Verse: 6)
And His saying: “But non will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills; He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness” (SOURAT AL-MUDDATHIR- Verse: 56)
God -The Right, -be He blessed- confirmed this attribute by the repetition of its derivatives that we mentioned before, so if you refer to His Holy Quran trying to count these derivatives then it will be difficult to do so. And it is of The Right’s -be He blessed- mercy and wisdom that He forgives the sins, and if He -be He blessed- closed the repentance’s way in the face of the sinner then he will persist in his sins and this will caused the destruction for himself and for the whole society in the present life and in the afterlife. And the sin’s forgiveness for the sinner doesn’t conflict with the God’s justice which requires to answer everybody according to his works, and the reason of this that there is no man in infallible from mistake, doing sins and guilt, and this makes the forgiveness a mercy for the whole human being. And The Right -be He blessed- clarified to us that there is no sins which is difficult to has His forgiveness, and this is clear in His saying: “Say: O my servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is oft-forgiving, Most Merciful” (SOURAT AZ-ZUMAR- Verse: 53)
Then the word “all” meant generality and universality, so, what ever was the sin greatness, any sin, then God’s forgiveness is greater and grander, and this rule doesn’t conflict with the following verses: “Those who reject Faith and keep off (men) from the way of Allah, have verily strayed far, far away from the path. Those who reject Faith and do wrong, Allah will not forgive them, nor guide them to any way. Except the way of Hell, to dwell therein for ever. And this to Allah is easy” (SOURAT AN-NISAA – Verses: 167, 168 169)
And His saying: “O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messengers, and the scripture which He hath sent to His Messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray. Those who believe, then reject Faith, and go on increasing in unbelief, – Allah will not forgive them, nor guide them on the way” (SOURAT AN-NISAA – Verses: 136, 137)
And the non conflict between the general rule and the verses we mentioned is clear in His saying: “Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom he pleaseth; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous indeed” (SOURAT AN-NISAA – Verse: 48)
And His saying: “Those who slander such of the Believers as give themselves freely to (deeds of) charity, as well as those who give according to their means, – and throw ridicule on them, – Allah will throw back their ridicule on them: and they shall have a grievous chastisement. Whether thou ask for their forgiveness, or not, (their sin is unforgivable): if thou ask seventy times for their forgiveness, Allah will not forgive them: because they have rejected Allah and His Messenger: and Allah guideth not those who are perversely rebellious” (SOURAT ATT-AWBA- Verses: 79, 80) Then the rule is that God -be He blessed- forgives all the sins since the man is the field of the right belief and faith of God -to whom belongs might & majesty- so, if he disbelieve in God or to be a polytheist then he got out of the faith and belief field.
And which is proved and confirmed that there is no sin after the disbelief and polytheism, that the works of disbeliever and polytheist so important to look at, because his good works is not purely for God, so he doesn’t deserve a reward for it, an for his bad works he will be punished in the field of the great punishment for the great sin whish is disbelief or polytheism, and in this God -be He blessed- said: “Nor will they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can, and if any of you turn back from their faith and die in unbelief, their works will ear no fruit in this life and in the Hereafter: they will be companions of the fire and will abide therein” (SOURAT AL BAQARAH- Verse: 217)
But we have to see that the deprivation for the disbeliever and the polytheist from forgiveness is connected (attached) with the continuance of his disbelief and polytheist, then The Right –be He blessed- will forgive him, and in this He is saying: “Say to the unbelievers if (now) they desist (from unbelief), their past would be forgiven them; but if they persist, the punishment of those before them is already (a matter of warning for them)” (SOURAT AL-ANFAAL- Verse: 38)
That The Right –be He blessed- will reward the real retraction-from disbelief polytheist-with forgiving all what was done before, and this is an unlimited mercy, forgiveness and blessing. And in the field of talking about God’s forgiveness, we mention the saying of an Orientals: “The God’s forgiveness –as it seems in the Holy Quran- is given with out known basic, and it is clear in the verse No. 284 of Sourat Al Baqarah, which was saying: “He forgiveth whom He pleaseth, and punisheth whom He pleaseth” And we reply for this by saying to him: “The forgiveness and punishment are done by God -be He blessed- and for any of His people, it is right, but this doesn’t mean that this matter is working according to the inclination, God -be He blessed- be far above inclination, unfairness and the differentiation between the people, that if God -to whom belongs might & majesty- wants to forgive someone make sure that he deserves this forgiveness, and if He wants to punish some one make sure that he deserves this punishment.
And here we mention an example for this, the saying of the prophet -peace be upon him- which was mentioned in Saheeh Al Bukhari & Saheeh Muslim: “There was a man spend lavishly on himself, and when he was to be dying (at the point of death) he told his sons: ‘If I died, burn me, then grind me then strew me in the wind I swear by God that God may punish me (torture me) with a punishment that He didn’t punish any other with. Then he died and his sons did what he wanted, the God -be He blessed- gave an order to the earth to collect what it has of his body and it did, then he (the man) became straight up, then God asked him: “what drive (make) you to do what you did?” He said: “God it was the fear of you”, then God forgave him. So, this Hadeeth indicates that the fear of God, and who back to the true faith of Him, will bring the forgiveness, also it indicates that the God’s forgiveness is not given to a man without excuse or worthiness.
Also we mention the saying of the prophet -peace be upon him- which was mentioned in Saheeh Muslim: “A man had a sin, then he said: God, forgive me, then God -be He blessed- said: my servant did a sin, and he knew that he has a God who forgives the sin, then he (the man) did another sin again, then he said: “God, forgive me” then God said: “my servant did a sin and he knew that he has a God who forgives the sin, then again he did another sin and he said: “God, forgive me my sin” then God -be He blessed- said: “my servant did a sin, and he knew that he has a God who forgives the sin, do what ever you want because I forgave you”
This Hadeeth indicates that God’s forgiveness is given only to the one who deserves it, and this servant whom God forgave him was always asking for forgiveness, and this was because of his pure and true faith of God and he is fear of Him.
And The Right’s -be He blessed- saying: “Do what ever you want because I forgave you” doesn’t mean that God gives him the free rein to do wrong and perversion on the earth, -be He raised far above this; it was clear in the Hadeeth that the man doesn’t do the same sin in each time, that God said: “then again he did another sin, then again he did a sin”, which means that in each time he make a different sin, so if the man will make the same sin the God -be He blessed- should say: “then again he did the sin”, add to this that the man was a blamer to himself, and this kind of people will climb to the soul’s ascend until he reach to the peaceful soul -if it is God’s will- to be so, and he doesn’t go back or down…that the forgiveness in this Hadeeth -although it is futurism but it is resulting from the man’s merit that God knows this from His knowing of what is there in this man’s self, and His knowing of the invisible, then it is not a random forgiveness followed by a tyranny and perversion of man on the earth.
And here also we said the prophet’s saying -peace be upon him- which was mentioned in Saheeh Bukhari: “The angels took one man’s soul who was before you are, they asked him: ‘did you make something good?’ he said: ‘I was looking from the rich man (solvent) and I was over look from insolvent’ then God said: “overlook him” and this is another example of a man who deserved the God’s forgiveness because of his mercy for other people and because of his overlook insolvents people.
And it was from God -be He blessed- mercy, that He taught us how to get His forgiveness so He said: “O ye who believe! If ye fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (to judge between right and wrong), remove from you (all) evil deeds and forgive you: for Allah is the Lord of grace unbounded) (SOURAT AL ANFAAL- Verse: 29)
So, faith (belief) and God –fearness are conditions which must be, to forgive the one whose asking for forgiveness, that who ask God’s forgiveness and he is disbeliever or polytheist there is no forgiveness for him, and who ask God’s forgiveness without a real fearness of God in his heart and regret of the sin he did then there is no forgiveness for him, that’s why the prophet -peace be upon him- and as the Holy Quran told us- was always asking God and praying to whom around him, by saying: “Say:’ If you do love Allah, follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most Merciful” (SOURAT AALI-IMRAAN, Verse: 31)
And following the prophet -peace be upon him- will be by belief in God –be He blessed-, His angels, books, prophets and the after life day, and not only the heart’s belief, but the heart’s belief which is approved by the work, that who believe and do good work will be possible that God will forgive him what he did of sins if he asked for God’s forgiveness.
God -to whom belongs might and majesty- always asks His people to ask His forgiveness, that He is said: “Know, therefore, that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for thy fault” (SOURAT MUHAMMAD- Verse: 19)
And His saying: “So pass over their faults, and ask for (Allah’s) forgiveness for them, and consult them in affairs (of moment)” (SOURAT AALI-IMRAAN- Verse: 159)
And His saying: “Then return from the place whence it is usual for the multitude so to do, and ask for Allah’s forgiveness” (SOURAT AL BAQARAH- Verse: 199)
That’s why God’s angels and prophets were always asking for God’s forgiveness; that angels used to ask God’s forgiveness for believers, as it was mentioned in His -be He blessed- saying: “Those who bear the Throne (of Allah) and those around it sing Glory and praise to their Lord; believe in Him; and implore forgiveness for those who believe, ‘our Lord! Thou embracet all things, in mercy and knowledge, forgive, then those who turn in repentance, and follow Thy path; and preserve them from the chastisement of the blazing fire!” (SOURAT GHAAFIR- Verse: 7)
And the prophet Moosa -Peace be upon him- when he punched his enemy and he killed him, he felt regret and sadness of what he did, although he didn’t mean to kill him, so he asked God’s forgiveness: “He prayed: ‘O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul! Do Thou then forgive me!’ So (Allah) forgave him, for He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” SOURAT AL-QASAS- Verse: 16)
And Nooh -peace be upon him- was asking for God’s forgiveness for him, his parents and the believers, as Allah -to whom belongs might and majesty- said: “O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in faith, and (all) believing men and believing women: and to the wrong –doers grant Thou no increase but in perdition!” (SOURAT NOOH – Verse: 28)
And Sulaiman -peace be upon him- as God -be He blessed- said: “He said: ‘O my Lord! Forgive me, and grant me a kingdom which, will not belong to another after me: for thou art the Grantor of Bounties (without measure)” (SOURAT SAAD – Verse: 35)
And Ibrahim -peace be upon him- as it was saying in the Holy Quran: “For they are enemies to me; not so that Lord and cherisher of the worlds; who created me, and it is He who guides me; who gives me food and drink, and when I am ill, it is He who cures me; who will cause me to die, and then to live (again); and who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgment” (SOURAT AL SHURAA- Verses: 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82)
And the prophet Muhammad -peace be upon him- and whom God forgave all his sins of the past and those who follow as The Right -be He blessed- said: “That Allah may forgive thee they faults of the past and those to follow; fulfill His favor to thee; and guide thee on the straight way” (SOURAT AL FATIH- Verse: 2)
But also still he is always asking for forgiveness, and it was mentioned in Saheeh Al Bukhari that he said: “God, forgive me my sin, ignorance and immoderation in all my matter, and what else you know more than me, O my Lord forgive me, my sins, purpose, ignorance and my joking and all, God, forgive me for what I did and to follow what I hided and what I declared, you are the one who put in advance and after, and you are able to do every thing”
And as it was mentioned in Saheeh Muslim that he -peace be upon him- asks for God’s forgiveness seventy time in the day and night and when God -be He blessed- forgave him of the past and those to follow, He -be He blessed- doesn’t mean to open the way of wrongdoing to him, no it is the forgiveness which is depends on the knowledge of The Right -to whom belongs might & majesty- of what was the prophet of a true and real faith with a real work and his uncovering to the hide invisible which He knows that this forgiveness will increase the obedience and thanks of the prophet -peace be upon him- and he used to get up in the night until his feet became swollen, they told him: God forgave you of the past and those to follow! Then he said: “Shouldn’t I be a thankful servant?!”
And because of The Right -be He blessed- mercy of the nation of prophet Muhammad -peace be upon him- He grants us with the escape from sins and to get the complete (general) forgiveness like: The Hajj (to whom can do it), it was mentioned that prophet Muhammad -peace be upon him- has said: “who went for Hajj and doesn’t dissipate then he will be as the day of his birth”
Also the five prayers and Friday to Friday and it was mentioned that the prophet –peace be upon him- said: “five prayers and Friday to Friday expiates what between them if it avoids the great sins”
And the pray after doing the sin and asking for forgiveness, as he said: “No are servant has done a sin then he do well cleanness (Tohoor) and pray then asks God -be He blessed- for forgiveness, He will forgive him”
Not only this, but God -be He blessed- made the sons (asking for forgiveness) for their parents after the death of parents is an omission of sins, it was mentioned that prophet has said: “If the man die, his work will stop except of three, a cursive alms (charity), a knowledge which will be advantage and a good (virtuous) soon will pray for him”
And he said: “The man’s grade will be promoted in the heaven by his son’s asking for forgiveness for him”
And we will end our talking with a Duaa to one cognizant who said: “O Lord, forgive me my nonfeasance for my self and for your right because you are the absolute master which we have to obey, and not because you need my worship”
And The Right -be He blessed- said: “Saying, Ask forgiveness from your Lord, for He is Oft-Forgiving, He will send rain to you in abundance, Give you increase in wealth and sons; and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers (of flowing water)” (SOURAT NOOH – Verses: 10, 11, 12)
