A long time ago in a different world… This photo was journalistic photograph of the year in 1994. It is of me and a 7 year old Muslim refugee. His last words were to ask me for sweets. The last thing he heard was me sending him on his way. He took about twenty steps and this happened. That is me in front of him.

How did this happen? Muslim refugees had been de-humanised by the press. The guy who pulled the trigger had been brainwashed into thinking they were vermin. Sound familiar?

I’ve come to the conclusion that once the first bullet is fired this kind of thing is almost inevitable. The point it needs to be challenged is during the period that the de-humanizing is taking place. The casual racism. The jokes about “muzzy’s” or Poles, or refugees. The comments about ‘them’ being ‘vermin’. That’s when right-thinking people need to make their stand. Because after those attitudes are entrenched, it’s too late.
