عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ – رضى الله عنه -؛ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ – صلى الله عليه وسلم:«قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: يُؤْذِينِى ابْنُ آدَمَ؛ يَسُبُّ الدَّهْرَ، وَأَنَا الدَّهْرُ، بِيَدِى الأَمْرُ، أُقَلِّبُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ». البخاري
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said (which means): Allah said: Sons of Adam inveigh against [the vicissitudes of] Time, and I am -The creator of incidents that happen in the- Time, in My hand is the night and the day”(Bukhari & Muslim). Comments: As the Almighty God is the Ordainer of all things – based on His absolute wisdom, Fairness, Mercy and all attributes- and when people inveigh against misfortunes that are part of Time is tantamount to inveighing against Him.
“And your Lord inspired the female bees to take (build) its houses (hives) on mountains, trees, and in (people’s) gardens Then (you female bee) eat from all the fruits and (you female bee) follow the ways of your Lord laid down (for you). There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing (cure) for people. In that, (there) is a sign for a people who give thought” (Al-Na’hl, 16: 68-69).
And when they commit an immorality, they say, “We found our fathers doing it, and Allah has ordered us to do it.” Say, “Indeed, Allah does not order immorality. Do you say about Allah that which you do not know?”(Al-Quran: 7/28)
The Prophet ﷺ said (in the meaning), “Whenever a Muslim supplicates Allah, He grants his supplication or avert a harm from him of equal proportions, as long as he does not supplicate for something sinful or something that would cut off the ties of kinship.” Thereupon someone said: Then we shall supplicate plenty. The Prophet ﷺ said: Allah is more plentiful in responding.” [at-Tirmidhi, Al–Hakim’s version adds: “…Or lays up an equivalent reward for him.”].
Over the years, prayer has always been a central part of the inaugural ceremonies. Clergy of all faiths have been invited to offer invocations. Often in our lifetime, Rev. Billy Graham was called to lead prayer, quoting liberally from Sacred Scripture, for example in 1989: “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it” (Ps. 127). God says: “O humankind, We have created you a single male and female (Adam and Eve) and made you into nations and tribes and communities, that you may know one another. Really, the most honored of you in the sight of God is the most righteous of you, and God has all knowledge…” (Surah Al-Hujarat)
