First Muslim woman elected as speaker in German state parliament

The first Muslim woman has been elected as the speaker of a state parliament in Germany in what she hailed as a “historic” step for the country.

Elkhansaa Elguenaoui is Student Speaker at UMass Amherst Undergraduate Commencement on May 6

Elguenaoui, of Medford, majored in neuroscience and psychology with a minor in biology. During her Elkhansaa Elguenaoui four years at UMass  Amherst, Elguenaoui says she is most proud of serving as a resident assistant, traveling to Turkey where she taught English and worked as a hospital intern and serving as the president of the Muslim Student Association in 2014. She also participated in interfaith programs on campus as part of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life. After graduation, Elguenaoui plans to go backpacking in Europe and then work in neuroscience research for two years, after which she hopes to attend medical school. “I was at the peak of my dream, I was right there, about to grab onto it, and I was told I couldn’t play,” Abdul-Qaadir said. “I started to question wearing hijab, I started to question who I was. I felt like once basketball was taken away, I lost my identity. For years, I was a Muslim basketball hooper. When basketball got taken away, I was just a Muslim.”
